Meet Mookie!! She’s a lively mix who’s around 2 years old. Mookie was found back in April with a litter of puppies while living on the streets presumably. I decided to see if I can help her situation by having her come live with me for the next 3 weeks as well as gifting 10 private sessions to her future home! If you’re looking to improve your dog’s leash skills then consider these 3 tips! 1. THE ENVIRONMENT!! In order to teach an animal, we need space for the animal to think and comprehend. This is why I start the learning process in a space the animal is already comfortable and adjusted to. Then our first push is a quiet outdoor environment, not a busy park with everything happening around them. They retain the teaching so much more when you teach them gradually. So, the farmers market is the WORST place for you to teach your dog leash walking skills when starting them out! 2. PAYMENT!! Giving good incentive to apply themselves and interact with us while ignoring the environmental triggers you’ll eventually be facing. This repetition in feeding absolutely phases out with time but while in the teaching mode, it is essential to mark and reward frequently, very frequently. Today I was able to just use kibble while doing these walk sessions! When we find ourselves in triggering environments for Mookie, it’s this routine that we will rely on. 3. KEEP IT SHORT! (Unlike this caption 😅) More frequent but short sessions teach so much more than one super long session, especially in the learning phases. We humans also respond better to this! When we push too long, usually feels like you’re not making progress. The progress is there but you’re requiring too much, too fast! Focus on the small wins because they add up to big ones!!
