🦴 Working with commingled human remains in bioarchaeology When skeletal remains become mixed together, one of the first questions we need to answer is: How many individuals are actually present? This is where the Minimum Number of Individuals (MNI) comes in. By identifying repeated skeletal elements, their side, size, age, sex, and other distinctive characteristics, we can establish the minimum number of people represented in a commingled assemblage. But MNI is only the beginning. Careful analysis of commingled remains can also provide information about biological variation, pathological conditions, trauma, activity-related changes, and sometimes aspects of funerary practices and taphonomic history. It's basically a puzzle — and every fragment can provide a clue. 🧩 #bioarchaeology #bioarchaeology #humanbones #anatomy

✨ That’s a wrap on osteological course! 🦴 This week, we took a deeper dive into some of the most important and challenging topics in bioarchaeology — from cremated 🔥 and fragmented remains to pathology and pseudopathology, exploring different pathological changes and their possible causes 🔍 The participants then put their knowledge into practice through exercises, reports and final presentations — and they did amazingly well! We are incredibly proud of their work and progress. 👏 Although this was only our second osteological course we have already realized how valuable this kind of laboratory-based practice is. Unlike excavation, the lab gives us more time to slow down, observe, discuss and explore these topics in greater depth. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us during these two weeks! ❤️ We hope to see you again very soon. And yes — we are already planning our next course for 2028 ☠️ #bioarchaeology #humanbones #anatomy #Bioarchaeology #osteology

Lack of fusion of C1 (atlas) A developmental variation caused by incomplete fusion of the posterior arch of the atlas. Although usually asymptomatic, it can be easily mistaken for a traumatic fracture or decapitation! 👨‍🦰🗡️ How common is it? Posterior arch defects of C1 are reported in roughly 2–4% of clinical populations. 🦴🔍 #Bioarchaeology #Osteology #Paleopathology #HumanRemains #anatomy
