I’m still thinking about the Legacy Through Mentorship Conference and honestly… what a day! 🥹✨ : : What took place in that room was truly something special. : : It wasn’t just a conversation about mentorship — it was a room filled with young adults, foster carers, professionals, mentors and people passionate about making a difference. 🤝🏽 : : What I loved most was how the room encouraged genuine conversations. People connected, shared experiences, asked questions, exchanged ideas and, most importantly, created space for one another. ❤️ : : I’m honestly SO grateful for every single person who played a part in making the day what it was — from our incredible guest speakers, stallholders and attendees, to the amazing team behind the scenes. 👏🏽 : : From the hosting, hospitality, setup, coordination and everything in between… WOW! You guys really did that! 🥹👏🏽 : : A massive thank you to everyone who showed up, supported, contributed and helped bring the vision to life. What we created together is something I’ll genuinely cherish. 💙 : : And yes… next year, we go again! 😝 I already can’t wait to see what next year’s theme will be! 👀✨

Today, I delivered an FGM Awareness Training session at Amour Esteem, and I thought it was a good opportunity to use this space to share a little of my own story. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) refers to procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is a harmful practice that can have lifelong physical, emotional and psychological consequences. Over 230 million girls and women globally have undergone FGM. I am part of that number. At the age of seven, I was pinned down and cut. It is an experience that has scarred me deeply and left me carrying a lot of shame, fear and pain. Some of the effects of FGM can stay with you long after the physical wounds have healed. FGM is not “just cultural.” It is not “just religious.” It is a harmful practice perpetrated against women and girls across communities and around the world. This is why FGM awareness sessions are so important to me. They give me the opportunity to share my lived experience while helping professionals and others understand FGM, recognise the signs, understand safeguarding responsibilities and appreciate the different complexities survivors may face. Awareness creates understanding. Understanding can create safer spaces. And safer spaces can make it easier for survivors to be heard and supported.
