This video tracks how the Manding people spread across West Africa and the globe, ignoring the modern borders we see today. 🌍👇 Watch how one culture expanded into the Mali Empire, survived forced displacement across the Atlantic, and fought colonial carving under Samori Touré. Europe drew the lines, splitting them into 14 countries, but the roots never broke. That’s why we built AfroYap, to reconnect our history. The Akan are a family of ethnic groups spanning southern and central Ghana and eastern Côte d'Ivoire, bound by a shared Kwa language, matrilineal kinship, and a civilization built on gold. They include the Asante, Fante, Bono, Akyem, Akuapem, Kwahu, Denkyira, Baoulé, Anyi and more! Together they number more than 20 million people, nearly half of Ghana's population, and their language, Twi, is the most widely spoken tongue in the country. The Akan heartland was once so rich in gold that Europeans named the whole coastline after it: the Gold Coast. The Akan world produced one of Africa's most distinctive political systems. Power passes through the mother's line, so a king is succeeded by his sister's son, not his own. Beside every king sits the Queen Mother (Ohemaa), who nominates him and can help remove him. At the center of the Asante nation sits the Golden Stool (Sika Dwa Kofi), believed to hold the soul of the people. In 1900, when the British governor demanded to sit on it, Queen Mother Yaa Asantewaa led an army to war rather than surrender it. The Akan also gave the world Kente cloth, Adinkra symbols, and the idea of Sankofa: "Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi," meaning it is not wrong to go back for what you forgot. #akan #ghana #ivorycoast #africanculture
