The advice is sound, it's just the method of delivery that sucks. Truly truly sucks. It sets a foundation of shame and judgement, which people with ADHD react VERY negatively to. We've been told what we're doing wrong our whole lives, and it's caused a lot of harm. Give us advice on what to do right and why it matters, why it'll help, or how it functions in relation to our brains. We'll listen to that. But telling us "don't do this, that, or the other" will just make us dig our feet in and say no.
