We’re proud to celebrate Kayleigh Summers, LCSW, Support Program Director at the AFE Foundation, therapist, advocate, and founder of The Birth Trauma Mama, on the publication of a new paper focused on effective communication with patients and families during and after severe maternal events. The paper, co-authored with other providers and patients, notably with physicians Melissa Bauer and Elliott Main, longtime champions of patient-centered maternity care and supporters of the AFE Foundation’s mission, highlights the critical role of compassionate, trauma-informed communication in improving outcomes and experiences for patients and families navigating obstetric emergencies. Drawing from her professional expertise in perinatal trauma and her lived experience as an AFE survivor, Kayleigh continues to advance conversations around recovery, healing, and the importance of centering patient voices in maternal healthcare. Compassionate communication is a clinical intervention in itself and a cornerstone of patient-centered healthcare. Congratulations on this important and needed publication.
