12 years since I touched the ice. Even longer since I did it for me. Growing up, skating was my escape. No matter how bad things were at home or at school, the minute I stepped on the ice, I felt free. Honestly, a feeling I have never really been able to find again. Skating was something I truly excelled at, a natural talent. Learning an axel after skating only 13 weeks and landing it consistently in 13 minutes. Consistent doubles after skating less than one year. A West Texas prodigy, in the news, a community behind me. It was something I worked hard at, something I was proud of, something I felt made me…me. But it came with some darkness - it is where my eating disorder started. The root of the intense bullying I dealt with for most of my teenage years. A dream I was forced to give up (not by choice, but by circumstance), resentment towards my parents. When I stepped away from the ice, I felt like I lost a piece of me. Like I was giving up on me; it was something I had fought so hard for and was so sure of. For years, I could not even watch skating on TV. I know I have searched for that feeling again - the freedom, the light happiness of feeling the ice under my feet. The joy of mastering a jump, spin, or passing a field test. I never found it. What I now know I did find is the persistence skating taught me. The resilience, the fight, knowing I can’t give up when something gets hard. Knowing that with consistency, I can achieve what I set my mind to. It is those things that helped me through my mental health journey over the past seven years. Those things that got me through the darkness. Those things that contributed to me being where I am today. At 40, I wanted to take back the narrative; I wanted to own my story. I wanted to find the freedom and space to be me, and I wanted the ice to be part of that. I want to bring back the joy little Aaron had, the spark the ice gave him. Am I the next Olympic champ? no, that’s no longer my headline. But I can rewrite the story. Like, how cool is it what our bodies can do? What our bodies remember? How they protect us, how they heal us, how they let us spin, glide, and be free. Here’s to finding your joy, whatever that might be. #findyourselfagain
