I’ve never owned less than I do now, and never needed more than this. I can’t say the same for Whimsy, whose ‘necessaries’ continually swell and stash themselves throughout the Lone Rider luggage on my motorcycle. I suppose I can’t exactly blame her because she would run bare-necked, drink from puddles, and hunt squirrels for every meal if I let her. Instead, I guess I should admit that her ‘necessaries’ are mostly my ‘wants’ for her. You might notice a particular problem if you ever watch those epic fantasy movies. There are wonderfully artistic scenes of towering towers and mountainous mountains and even sometimes islands floating among the clouds. But all that CGI might make you feel like our own puny mountains and stumpy towers and earth-bound islands are rather unremarkable in comparison. It’s not true and never will be—at least not until you can watch a movie with all your five senses—but it might sometimes feel that way. But not when you visit Devils Tower in eastern Wyoming. For that matter, no single part of Wyoming that I visited underwhelms. Besides, where else will you get rained on when there’s a clear blue sky overhead? Or where that blue sky can become a dark thunderstorm with gale-force winds in a few minutes. I feel a nagging sense of FOMO nearly every time I see a sign posted for a scenic outlook. This feeling is worse still when I’m riding through someplace as truly breathtaking as Badlands National Park in South Dakota where the alien scene changes and morphs with each mile. But traveling by motorcycle doesn’t lend to frequent stops, especially where there’s a helmet, gloves, and Whimsy’s goggles to remove and replace at each one. So I pick my scenic outlook stops pretty carefully, and make sure to get the feeding, bathroom, and the most scenic views at every one. But I also try to remind myself of something else, which is special and unique to visiting these extraordinary places by motorcycle. The experience of the ride itself and your view from the dome of a helmet is more extraordinary and scenic than most of the outlooks. A lot of my intercom chatter is instructions to Whimsy on where to look. Only occasionally I’m directing her to face the camera. More often I point her schnout to the side where here eyes will spy a herd of bison, an antelope grazing, or maybe a fox or coyote on the prowl. Usually, she’s very quick to catch a scent and train her eyes on its source. But sometimes not so much. I’ll look in my mirrors and notice how her eyes, ears, and nose have wandered down their own peculiar trail. I’m incredibly proud of the obedience training we’ve instilled in Whimsy. She has excellent recall and tends to stick close by my side—especially around meal times. But she’s also a curious shepherd with a strong prey drive, which means I still worry about her wandering off and getting into trouble. At each new Airbnb, I can set up a virtual fence so I can keep an eye on her and rein her in if she starts wandering too far. In my experience, most of the “bucket list” places leave you underwhelmed. Maybe there’s an enormous crowd. Maybe you’ve seen too many overly Photoshopped images. Or maybe you’re simply preoccupied or distracted at the exact moment you’re supposed to be taking it all in. The Bonneville Salt Flats is not that kind of place. I went there hoping to recreate—or maybe recapture—the magic of Uyuni, and hopefully re-stage the photo from the cover of my book (available for preorder now!). Those were high hopes, I suppose, and Bonneville let me down completely. You might expect to have to squeeze your motorcycle into some tight places when you’re traveling. I’ve wedged Tuskarossa onto ship decks, through alleyways, into entryways, and even hotel lobbies. I’ve never had to squeeze her through the fence and into the backyard of an Airbnb before. It was a tight bit of maneuvering, and it left me feeling a bit like a prisoner—although I always feel chained to my computer during our workdays between travel segments. At least, there was no question about how easy it is to disconnect my Lone Rider MotoPanniers—and Greg’s MotoBags. During the first few seasons of this journey, I was focused exclusively on capturing the best video I could as we traveled through stunning landscapes and exotic foreign lands. I suppose I figured that if a picture is worth a thousand words, then an ultra-high-def video clip must be worth even more than that? Except it’s not. Sharp video and clear audio are two different—and equally essential—parts of telling the story. But here’s where the two are similar: Using the in-camera mic to record your voice over the rumble of a motorcycle engine is like recording video without the stabilization that an action camera provides. The results are poor, and you can see and hear it! That’s why I use the DJI Mic 3. There is a marvelous thing called cloudberries. It’s a small fruit found on the Arctic tundra during the warm days of summer. When ripe, they’re sweet and refreshing. But to me, cloudberries mean something more than that. They’re the special and extraordinary things that lie just beyond the roadside which you might miss when your eyes are fixed only on what’s ahead. Sunflowers look nothing like cloudberries.
