September 28th is National Good Neighbor Day and we are fortunate enough to have some great neighbors. One of the best things about Old Sacramento is that there are two wonderful museums next door to each other! Make sure when you plan your next visit to the Sacramento History Museum to also visit our neighbors, the California State Railroad Museum! We are both open 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm! Additionally, there is another exhibition to see in Old Sacramento and that is the Death by Natural Causes exhibition in the Paperworks building on Front Street. For today, Jared discussed our neighbors and letterpress printed a train robber wanted poster with the initials “C.S.R.M.” for the CA State Railroad Museum. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. You can order this wanted poster in our museum store and on our website! #SacHistoryMuseum #goodneighbor #museumtok #sacramento #printing

One of the ways we like to stay relevant on social media is to post content that is tied to a specific day. When it comes to videos from our print shop exhibit, “national holidays” help us with highlighting woodcuts and electrotypes from our collections. For today, September 27th, Channey letterpress printed three woodcuts from the Lewis Winter Collection for National Scarf Day. Much of the cuts in the Winter Collection are of clothing items and accessories because Winter designed cuts for local magazines, catalogs, and newspapers in the late 1880s through the 1890s. Lewis Winter was a woodcut artist and engraver who had his business at 627 J Street in Sacramento from 1888 to 1910. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #NationalScarfDay #museumtok #printing #sacramento

September 29th is National Coffee Day! This is a day Howard can really support as his coffee cup is often hidden in the background of our videos from the print shop at the Sacramento History Museum. Up until very recently, we didn’t have many options to print for a day like this. For today, Howard letterpress printed a photo engraving that Jared recently acquired from an online purchase. This engraving, which is way over type high, depicts a man holding a coffee cup and the text states, “Coffee and none better.” This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #NationalCoffeeDay #coffee #museumtok #printing

This letterpress print needed some rainbow ink and it goes out to all of those who love Dolly Parton. Since our last two Dolly quotes received very positive responses from our viewers, we thought we’d print another in our print shop at the Sacramento History Museum. In this video, Channey letterpress printed a quote by Dolly. Set in 60 point Caslon font, the print states, “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you got to put up with the rain! -Dolly Parton.” This was printed with a gradient of red, yellow, blue, and purple ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. Sixty prints were made on this press run. These prints are available in our Museum Store and website! #SacHistoryMuseum #dollyparton #rainbow #museumtok #printing

We have a new pop up exhibit on display at the Sacramento History Museum! “Drawing Democracy” is a month-long exhibition exploring political cartooning, satire, free expression, and democracy. Come see how a drawing can make us laugh, think, question—and sometimes even challenge the status quo! The exhibition runs now through October 31 and is included with Museum admission. To go along with the new exhibit, we have a NEW photo engraving to make souvenir letterpress prints. This engraving pays homage to the “join or die” political cartoon created by Benjamin Franklin in 1754. This engraving includes “DRAWING DEMOCRACY DRAW, or DIE.” with a curly dip pen. This engraving and exhibit was made in partnership with the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. The original artwork was sent to OWOSSO Graphic Arts in Owosso, Michigan where the photo engraving was designed. Over 100 prints were made on this press run. These were printed with black rubber base ink using a 3x5 Kelsey Excelsior tabletop printing press. #SacHistoryMuseum #editorialcartoon #sacramento #museumtok #printing

This one goes out to all of those who love Dolly Parton. There’s so many wonderful songs written and performed by her that could be typeset and printed in our print shop at the Sacramento History Museum but she has some inspirational quotes as well. In this video, in honor of the legacy of Dolly Parton, Channey letterpress printed a favorite quote by her. Set in 30 point Caslon font, the print states, “You'll never do a whole lot unless you're brave enough to try. - Dolly Parton.” This was printed with pink rubber base ink using a 4x6 Golding Official No. 2 tabletop printing press, which was made in 1919. Eighty prints were made on this press run. These prints are free and you can get one when you visit the museum (while prints last). #SacHistoryMuseum #dollyparton #pink #museumtok #printing

Replying to @Sacramento History Museum We show a lot of printing in our videos, but not so much of the clean up process. Here is how we clean ink off of the ink stone after letterpress printing. We use 1K kerosene as a solvent and some shop towels for cleaning. The order of ink on the ink stone from left to right is red, yellow, blue, and purple to form a rainbow gradient of ink. This ink was used to print some prints of a Dolly Parton quote that are available in our museum store. #SacHistoryMuseum #cleaning #cleantok #museumtok #rainbow

If you needed an excuse to bake some cookies today, here you go. October 1st is National Homemade Cookie Day! Like many of these “national holidays,” it gives us an excuse to highlight some of our cuts in our print shop. For today, Howard letterpress printed a photo engraving, made in the 1950s, that depicts a hand pulling a cookie out of a jar. This was printed with pink rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #homemadecookies #cookies #museumtok #printing

Why is baseball in Sacramento so big right now? The history of baseball in our city has origins all the way back to the Gold Rush. With all the talk of a major league expansion, come learn about Sacramento’s baseball history at the Sacramento History Museum with our new and exciting exhibition, “Play Ball! Sacramento in the National Pastime.” In this video, Shawn discusses the new exhibit and the big questions our team pursued in creating this exhibition. Going to a game at Sutter Health Park? Visit the Sacramento History Museum the same day as the game, present your ticket to the game, and enjoy half off admission to the museum! #SacHistoryMuseum #sactiktok #museumtok #sacramento #baseball

Ever since the 1450s, when letterpress printing started to be formalized, a way was developed to organize all the letters of type. What takes up a great deal of space in a print shop, especially our shop, is type. In the background of our videos are type cabinets full of type cases. Each type case is an individual font (typeface, size, and style). We have about 350 different fonts between what is in our print shop exhibit and in our storage. Most of the type is organized in a specific style of type case called the California job case. In this video, Lou explains the history and layout of the California job case. He also shares the way he learned to memorize the layout over 50 years ago when he first learned printing in school. #SacHistoryMuseum #museumtok #printing #letterpress #learnontiktok
