🚗 Balloon-Powered Cardboard Car Materials * 1 piece of corrugated cardboard (about 5” × 8”) * 4 bottle caps (or cardboard wheels) * 2 wooden skewers * 2 drinking straws * 1 balloon * 1 flexible straw (or 2 regular straws taped together) * Tape * Hot glue (or strong craft glue) * Scissors Instructions Step 1: Cut a rectangle from cardboard to make the car body. Step 2: Tape two drinking straws across the underside of the cardboard—one near the front and one near the back. These will hold your axles. Step 3: Slide a wooden skewer through each straw. Step 4: Attach a wheel to each end of the skewers. Make sure the wheels spin freely. Step 5: Stretch the balloon over one end of a straw and tape it tightly so no air can escape. Step 6: Tape the balloon and straw to the top of the car with the open end of the straw pointing toward the back of the car. Step 7: Blow up the balloon through the straw, pinch the end to keep the air inside, place the car on a smooth surface, and let go! STEM Challenge Can you redesign your balloon car to make it travel even farther? Experiment with different wheel sizes, car weights, balloon sizes, or axle placements, and test which design performs best.
