This one can be a big oof, but once you get into the work of parenting consciously, you & your child both reap the countless benefits. The thing is, the goal isn’t to get your triggers to go away. The goal is to work on reducing the negative impact and the control that your triggers hold over you. In other words, what matters isn’t that you get triggered, but what happens next. In those emotional moments when you are triggered, your default reactions come so much easier than responding to your children in ways aligned with your values. But often, those triggered default reactions can cause harm to your child and your relationship with them. This is of course unless you can learn to expand the space between your reaction and your response. If you can give yourself time to find regulation, you can change the way you react to your kiddos. When we bring awareness and acceptance to our triggers, we can learn to create a pause by learning to override your default reactions with a “do no harm” plan. Examples: If your inclination is to yell, you might need to bite your tongue. If your default is to grab your child, you might need to stuff your hands in your pockets. Whatever your “plan” is for these moments, it must include super simple actions that are easily accessible. So how do you create you own plan? I’ve created a 6-step workbook to help you “Do No Harm.” In the workbook, you’ll get clear on your goals to respond, identify your triggers and your default reactions, and come up with personalized plans for these triggered moments that will allow you to respond in ways you won’t regret! This is definitely the thing I’m most proud of creating and I use my own plans daily! I walk you through the 6-step process I used when learning to manage my own triggers! ✨Want more info?✨ DM me the word: “PLANS” below and I’ll send you the details! #donoharm #consciousparenting #breakingcycles #triggered #cyclebreaker #responsiveparenting
⏰It’s time to reframe time-outs. Time-outs are for you, not your child. You know those moments in parenting when you feel like you’re going to lose it? You’re triggered and not seeing or thinking clearly? You have committed to being a responsive parent, one that tries to not yell, shame, or punish. But how are you supposed to help guide your child when you are so dysregulated, overwhelmed, and upset? The answer is quite simply…you can’t. Not from that triggered place. This is where time-puts can be a life saver. To take a parenting time-out: 1️⃣Ensure your child is in a safe location. 2️⃣Tell them, “I’m feeling overwhelmed. I’m going to go to the other room and take a few breaths and I’ll be right back to help you.” 3️⃣Take a time-out. Breathe. Get a glass of water. Scream in a pillow. Do whatever self-regulation strategies work for you. 4️⃣When you are ready and as regulated as you need, head back in to your child and let them know you are back and ready to help them. After your parent time-out, you can give your child a “time-in”. Want to few more confident in parenting?
