Design development for a slim fit shirt pattern, overall pretty happy but I’m thinking of a few adjustments to the fit. Happy with the overall design though #patterndesigner #patterncutting #fashiondesign #sewingpattern
Do you know what a pattern notcher is? Necessary no, but handy, yes! I found myself clipping away at some patterns the other day when I was asked what this handy little tool did, so I thought I’d share for anyone that hasn’t seen one before.
I’ve been wanting to try a projector for sewing for such a long time, so when Aurzen offered to send me the zip projector to try, I jumped at the chance! It took me a bit of time to set up the first time, as I’d not really used anything like this before, but once got the initial technology set up, I enjoyed using it and have used it on other projects since. Because I want to teach you 💕 Next year I’m going to be putting a MUCH bigger focus on education at NH Patterns. I LOVE teaching you about sewing, pattern cutting, fashion design and fitting, and it’s something I’ve wanted to develop properly for a really long time, I’ve just never had enough time to actually do it! And because everyone learns differently, I don’t want that to just mean courses. Yes, there’ll be courses, but also free education, longer and short-form content, in-person workshops and various educational products designed to help you actually use these skills and put them into practice. Sewing patterns aren’t going anywhere either! But I’ll be cutting back on my freelance pattern work and being much more selective about the patterns I release, so I can spend more time developing this side of the business and honestly, I’m really excited about it. If you’re interested specifically in learning pattern cutting or grading, I have separate waitlists linked in my bio where you’ll hear about anything new I release in those areas. And for everything else (sewing, fitting, design and general NH Patterns education) make sure you’re on my regular mailing list! I’m excited to see where this goes 🥰
Replying to @pinoii Deconstructing the House of CB Debutante dress from a photo to determine what I’d consider if I were to make a pattern for this based on my basic blocks. I haven’t done one of these in such a long time but I really enjoy doing them so I want to get back into it! I had to cut out so much of this video. I wanted to talk about the fit and how I’d adapt things to fit a wider size range, design details I love and design details I would change, how I’d go about actually drafting it and so much more. I started with 17 minutes of talking and had to cut it down to 4 🤣 I’m thinking of making these videos long form to get it all in, as it will probably takes me just as long to edit too! Let me know if you’d like me to do long form videos that go alongside these pattern breakdowns and I’ll see what I can do 🥰 #patterndrafting #patterndraftingtutorial #patterncuttingtutorial #draftingadress #patternmaking
Interested in learning how to grade your own sewing patterns? 👀 Illustrator isn’t actually designed for pattern cutting (and definitely is not the industry standard!!) but I do think it’s a really accessible option if you want to create your own patterns at home. Today I’m grading (taking my sample size pattern and turning it into a full size range). Pattern grading is something I get asked about all the time and I’ve been thinking about creating something to teach you how to do this yourself in illustrator. If that’s something you’d be interested in, head to the link in my bio to register your interest! ✨✂️
What’s stopping you from learning pattern cutting? If pattern cutting is a skill you would love to learn but you don’t necessarily know where to start, or if there’s a part that feels particularly intimidating, I’d love to know what’s holding you back. I’m hoping to share a lot more about the whole process of pattern cutting on here in an easy to understand way, but I want to make sure I’m talking about the things you actually want to know. So drop me a comment and maybe I’ll talk about it in a future video 👀
New Autumn fabrics have started to arrive 🍂 So many gorgeous fabrics arrived today that I immediately wanted to place another order for more. I particularly love the first 2 floral prints, (they’ll make some gorgeous dresses) and the red check I think i want to make a shirred top with long sleeves. What would you make? Available on my website now 🥰 if you want the link it’s in my bio, or just comment something with the word ‘website’ in it and I’ll send you a direct link. ✨
A live pattern deconstruction…on a stage at the @knitandstitchshows Should be fun right? All jokes aside, I’m actually looking forward to it. I have a stand this year but I also have a few workshops and some live shows so I’m going to be pretty busy, but I love the whole vibe of the event so I know if will be really fun. If you want to go to either show, you can use my code: NHPATTERNS to get £2 off your entry ticket (standard adult or concession ticket. Not valid on Saturday 10th October 2026 for the London show). Really excited to see some of you there! Do let me know if you’re going 🥰
Sorry to tell you this but…yes, your grainline matters 🫣 so before you consider switching and cutting your pattern crossgrain, consider how it may affect your final garment. Making small samples like these (if you have enough fabric) can tell you a lot about how a fabric will behave before you go ahead and cut the whole pattern. In this case I wanted to make a dress but the fabric design meant I would need to cut crossgrain. The gathers in the dress just wouldn’t have worked the way I wanted them too, so I decided to scrap that idea and make a sort of shacket instead!
Sorry I forgot Tik Tok existed for a bit 😭😭🫠 Ummm how do sewing content creators and sewing pattern designers post everyday though…especially video content, because my life and most of my work days are not that exciting and most involve sitting at a computer…

What’s stopping you from learning pattern cutting? If pattern cutting is a skill you would love to learn but you don’t necessarily know where to start, or if there’s a part that feels particularly intimidating, I’d love to know what’s holding you back.

Dressmaking cup sizes vs bra sizes. Whats the difference & how do I find out my cup size? 🤔
