Let’s talk about CCCA (Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia). I am not an expert in scalp disease which is why I’ve spent the last decade looking for answers. I got the name of an amazing dermatologist here in Toronto thanks to the experts I met back in 2019 at the @naturalhairindustryconvention. But when the dermatologist changed clinics my client lost her referral and was sent back to square one. As her loctician, I’m up against a difficult decision. My client does not want to be bald so at every appointment I never bring it up. I don’t have to. She gets reminded about it every time she looks in a mirror. Nobody has the right to judge. But we all do because we all come from bias. It’s easy to jump to conclusions or make up the story inside our minds. The reality is that no one knows all the information. Sometimes we think it’s chemical damage, but it’s not. Sometimes we think tension alopecia, but it’s not. Instead, it might be hereditary. It might be autoimmune. At the end of the day, the best thing I can do for my client is to listen and be supportive. Whatever that means for her. 📌Empathy is a major part of being a loctician.
