Three tips for ADHDers getting back to the school / work / daily routine after the holidays 📣 It's so common for ADHDers to be all or nothing thinkers. For many of us, we cope via perfectionism. It's also common for us to set goals that burn us out. So here's some tips on starting the year more gently: 1 - Lower your expectations! Just because it's January and just because it's the first day / week back doesn't mean you have to do it all. 2 - Do not cram your schedule with too many important appointments, meetings, or social gatherings in your first weeks back. Give yourself space to breathe! 3 - Make time for things that bring you joy, are important for sensory regulation, for seeing the people that make you feel good! Just because the holidays are over doesn't mean that prioritizing self-care or activities that bring you joy should stop!! #brainhealth #neurodiversity #neurodiversityawareness #neurodiversitydiscovery #neurodiversityrocks #disabilityawareness #timemanagement #executivefunction #mentalhealth #stress #adhder #adhdfamily #newyear #goals #2023 #mondays #mondaymood #mentalhealth #teachergram #teachersofinstagram #educators #parenting #mom #momlife #momsofinstagram #school #learning #learningdisability #disabilityacceptance #neurodivergenttiktok #neurodivergentparenting #neurodivergentbrain
✔️part 1: Advice for parents with ADHD kids: this is the way I’ve advocated for my grade 2 kid that has made the most difference. •set a boundary with everyone involved in your kids education that they do NOT punish or reprimand your kid (including by singling them out or raising their voice at them) for not hearing, being able to process or being able to act on / remember an instruction. My kid has tremendous sense of belonging at school and the teachers and support staff shape this by respecting this request I made of them at the beginning of the year. Follow for Part 2 to understand why this is so important. ***No child should ever be punished or singled out for not being able to follow an instruction for any variety of reasons. This includes all disabled & neurotypical kids. We also know there are certain factors outside of ability that make certain kids more likely to be punished or reprimanded. Every parent should play a part in insisting upon school being a safe place for every child. #adhd #adhdparent #adhder #neurodivergent #parenting #letthembelittle #accomodations #nd #audhd #schools #teachers #education #parentlife #momlife #elementary #adhdstudents #teachersoftiktok #teacherlife #teachersoftiktok2023 #preschool #educators #disabilityawareness #disability #selfregulation #connection #belonging #awareness #focus #gentleparenting #mentalhealth #neurodivergent #neurodivergenttiktok
✔️Part 2: why asking my ADHD kid’s teachers never to reprimand my kid (including by singling them out) for not listening is so important. When ADHD kids ‘don’t listen’, there’s typically no choice involved (and many ADHDers will be accused of this constantly if someone doesn’t understand). Whether due to differences in auditory processing, attention, distraction or short term memory, children (and adults!) should never be punished for not being able to do something. ADHD kids have heard more than 20,000 negative statements about themselves made by teachers, parents, and peers by the time they're 12! This of course has negative consequences. Yes we can help our kids build executive function. Criticizing them in the moment when they're unable to do something, however, does nothing for this. ***No child should ever be punished or singled out for not being able to follow an instruction for any variety of reasons.
Three tips for ADHDers getting back to the school / work / daily routine after the holidays 📣 It's so common for ADHDers to be all or nothing thinkers. For many of us, we cope via perfectionism.
Criticizing them in the moment when they're unable to do something, however, does nothing for this. ***No child should ever be punished or singled out for not being able to follow an instruction for any variety of reasons. This includes all disabled & neurotypical kids. We also know there are certain factors outside of ability that make certain kids more likely to be punished or reprimanded.
This includes all disabled & neurotypical kids. We also know there are certain factors outside of ability that make certain kids more likely to be punished or reprimanded. Every parent should play a part in insisting upon school being a safe place for every child. #adhd #adhdparent #adhder #neurodivergent #parenting #letthembelittle #accomodations #nd #audhd #schools #teachers #education #parentlife #momlife #elementary #adhdstudents #teachersoftiktok #teachersoftiktokfyp #school #disabilityacceptance #acceptance #inclusion #neurodiversity #executivefunction #inclusion #neurodivergentparenting
