“Before you go to heal someone, ask if they are willing to give up what made them sick.” This line is often passed around as a Chinese proverb or attributed to Hippocrates, but the exact origin is unclear. The meaning is still brutal as hell. You cannot save someone who is still protecting the habit, environment, vice, or pattern destroying them. Help means fuck all when the cause is still being fed. “A rich man’s joke is always funny.” This line comes from Manx poet Thomas Edward Brown, 1830 to 1897, in his 1887 poem The Doctor. Brown was pointing at the ugly gravitational pull of wealth. People laugh louder when the man speaking can reward them, employ them, exclude them, or ruin them. Power has always had a way of making bullshit sound brilliant. “Mercy to the wolf is cruelty to the sheep.” The exact origin of this saying is uncertain, though the idea has existed for centuries. Adam Smith expressed a similar principle in 1759, warning that mercy toward the guilty can become cruelty toward the innocent. “Great ambition is the passion of a great character.” The original date of this remark is unknown, but it appears in a nineteenth century collection of Napoleon’s aphorisms. His full reflection makes a distinction: ambition can drive a man to extraordinary achievements or terrible deeds. What matters is the principles behind it. Ambition alone makes no man great. “When the enemy makes a false move, one must take care not to interrupt him.” On 2 December 1805, at Austerlitz, Napoleon watched the Austrian and Russian forces abandon the strategically important Pratzen Heights. Rather than attack immediately, he allowed their movement to develop before striking their weakened centre. Jomini recorded the remark in 1827. Sometimes the enemy needs no help destroying his own position. “You write to me that it is impossible; that is not French.” On 9 July 1813, Napoleon responded to General Le Marois, who had expressed serious doubts about defending Magdeburg against the Coalition forces. Napoleon rejected the very suggestion that the task was impossible. It was a direct rebuke from an emperor who expected his commanders to find solutions, not surrender to difficulties. “Let those who have sharpened the daggers of civil war in France tremble!” On 20 May 1796, following his victories in northern Italy and the capture of Milan, Napoleon issued a proclamation to his soldiers. His warning targeted those he accused of fuelling France’s internal conflict and collaborating with its enemies during the Revolution. His victories had changed the situation, and he was making it clear that the campaign was far from over. “The men who laughed at your distress now tremble before your victories.” On 26 April 1796, Napoleon addressed his Army of Italy after six victories in just two weeks. His soldiers had endured hunger, inadequate equipment and brutal marches. Those who had mocked their suffering and hoped for their defeat were now watching their enemies retreat. Now have the courage to follow, whatever the cost. “The Cross Stands While the World Turns.” The traditional motto of the Carthusian Order, founded by Saint Bruno in 1084, with the expression documented in the 17th century. Kingdoms rise, empires turn to fucking dust, and every generation believes theirs will somehow last. The Carthusians knew better. Everything around a man can collapse. His faith doesn’t have to collapse with it. “For the Greater Glory of God.” The motto of the Society of Jesus, founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola and approved in 1540. The Jesuits believed even ordinary actions could serve something greater than oneself. No crown, battlefield or grand achievement required. How you work, how you treat others and what you do when nobody sees you. That’s where character is made. “Through the Cross to the Light.” A historical Christian expression used by 19th century bishop Ferenc Lönhárt, appearing on his coat of arms in 1877. Read the order. The Cross first. The light after. Everyone wants redemption. Far fewer are willing to carry what comes before it.
